Get off the beaten track on your holiday in Porthallow, where life slows down and you can enjoy the rugged beauty of this unspoilt area.  Unmistakably Cornish, sleepy Porthallow is a traditional fishing village where you’ll find brightly coloured fishing boats and lobster pots pulled up on the shingle beach against a backdrop of whitewashed cottages and beyond that the wild, atmospheric landscapes and coastline of the Lizard Peninsula. 

Although the fishing fleet is today greatly reduced it’s not hard to imagine what life was like here in times gone by when Porthallow was at the centre of the Cornish pilchard trade.  The pilchard cellars where fishermen stored their catch are still clearly visible on the beach, and the friendly village pub, aptly named The Five Pilchards, unsurprisingly serves lots of fish and is as much the focal point of the village today as it has been for over 300 years.  

Porthallow beach is primarily shingle but still a good spot for a picnic or a swim and the famous Manacles Reef just a mile offshore is popular with divers and the scene of many a historical shipwreck.  Other days on your Porthallow holiday can be spent walking the South West Coast Path which runs through the village and opens up the stunning Lizard Peninsula and the Helford River beyond.  Families will enjoy a visit to nearby Roskilly’s Farm, home of the famously delicious Roskilly’s ice cream where you can take scenic farm walks, watch the cows being milked and ice cream being churned before a spot of tea, cake and of course an ice cream in the cafe.  Or a short drive brings you to the famously beautiful Helford Estuary, where you’ll find watersports hire, pretty beaches, waterside pubs and the fascinating tropical gardens at Trebah and Glendurgan. In the opposite direction Lizard Point, the most southerly tip of the UK, is just over 10 miles away from Porthallow and is well worth a visit.

So leave the complications of modern life at the door of your holiday cottage and enjoy the peace, quiet, history and stunning scenery on a holiday in Porthallow.

Porthkerris Divers
(Less than a mile)

A family run dive centre with highly experienced instructors and skippers based at Porthkerris, a beautiful secluded cove tucked away on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula.  From here you can dive the Manacles reef and numerous shipwrecks, or if you prefer shore diving there is the Drawna Rock just off the beach, the perfect training ground for beginners.

Based in a kiosk on Helford Passage beach, Helford River Boats runs the passenger ferry which runs between Helford Passage and Helford village, home to a fantastic riverside pub, The Shipwrights Arms. They also offer a fleet of self-drive motor boats, rowing boats, Sit-On kayaks and paddleboards which you can hire and explore the stunning Helford River estuary at your own pace. Visit Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek, Port Navas Oyster Farm or the hidden coves and quiet beaches. No previous boating experience is necessary as Helford River Boats provide full instructions, as well as safety equipment and a map of the river. They can also provide a water taxi service, which must be booked in advance.

The men who ran the Ferry were very friendly and helpful.

Too expensive to use the ferry. Adds £36 for 4 to go for a meal at the Shipwrights or coffee at Holy Mackeral. Sorry for those two businesses

Always excellent. We have had boats on the river for years, always well looked after in our absence. Also use the ferry occasionally, excellent, also buy ice cream etc from the kiosk. Everything you or a child could possible want! An essential part of the HP experience. Keep up the good work, and thank you.
